Everybody says breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It’s a cliche at this point. But why is it so important?

Chances are if you have a great meal in the morning there is a higher chance you’ll eat a good lunch which turns into eating a good dinner. By eating breakfast and not being “starved” by lunch time, you’re less likely to overeat and more likely to choose healthier foods. Throw a workout in there and you definitely won’t want to ruin all of your hard work with a poor meal.

Breakfast is also exactly what it sounds like, breaking the fast. Could you imagine not eating for 7+ hours during the day? Not me! My stomach would be rumbling like crazy. Thank goodness that process happens while we are sleeping. The first meal after fasting for (hopefully) 7+ hours is incredibly important because it sets the tone for how our body will function for the rest of the day.

Research has shown that by eating breakfast you’ll have less cravings, better self control, and higher productivity throughout your day.

A great breakfast should include a protein (my go-to is egg whites), a carb (a piece of whole grain toast), and a fat (avocados anyone?). The combination of these macronutrients is important to help keep you full and satisfied until lunch time.

No time to make breakfast?

Try sipping a smoothie on your way to work (I’ll drop my favorite recipe below). You can pack in all of the macronutrients that you need in a smoothie. This is also a great option if you don’t like eating breakfast. Liquids are broken down faster than solids so if you plan on drinking your breakfast, have a snack on hand that you can eat before lunch comes around.

Bottom line, if you are starving by lunch time and usually choosing non healthy options, it’s time to rethink your breakfast habits.
