We Don’t Make It Easy to Quit: Accountability, Commitment, and Real Change

When people sign up at my gym, they’re doing more than just joining a fitness program—they’re committing to creating a better life. And that’s why I don’t roll out the red carpet when someone decides to quit. If you’re here, it’s because you set a goal, and you came to a professional to help you reach it. So when you decide to back out, I’m not throwing a party and cheering you on for walking away from the path you chose. Quitting isn’t supposed to be easy.

At Veneration we’re on a mission to help 5,000 busy parents in Johnstown, Ohio add years to their life and life to their years. That means I need to help you not only increase your lifespan, but also your healthspan – the number of years you are independent and live free of disease, illness and metabolic derangement. I take that very seriously. It’s my life’s work.

Over the years I have heard it all when someone requests to cancel their membership. After getting emails that read “Cancel my membership”, and we pick up the phone to call them to discover what’s happening, it’s not uncommon to hear “It shouldn’t be difficult to just cancel this subscription”.

Look, if I could, I’d have to climb a rope in the middle of the gym and ring a bell in front of all your peers to quit. That’s what “difficult” would look like. Perhaps then, staring down that last challenge, you’d stop and think before giving up on yourself. You’d think about the promises you made to yourself, the progress you’ve fought for, and the goals you’re working toward achieving. And if you can’t make it to the top of that rope… well I suppose that’s a good sign that your work here isn’t done.

But of course we don’t no anything of the sort, instead we request a simple exit conversation. I am not so naive to believe that everybody who starts at my gym will stay forever. But after we both embark on a journey to a better “you” together, I’m never less shocked when someone is prepared to quit on themselves.

When You Join, We Commit to Your Success

Here’s the deal: when you step into my gym, I’m making a commitment to you that goes beyond showing you how to squat or deadlift. I’m committed to seeing you achieve your goals. My team and I are committed to guiding you as you make steady, consistent progress toward becoming the person you set out to be. And here’s the reality—true, lasting change takes time.

Two years of putting in the work, three days a week, consistently. That’s what it takes to build habits, fully ingrain a lifestyle, and turn fitness into something you don’t just “do” but something that becomes part of who you are. I know that if you stay with us for those two years, something will shift. You’ll not only see the changes, but you’ll feel them deeply enough to make this a part of your life.

After two years you’ll have developed and lived by a real habit, built a foundation, seen real results and reached a point where stopping isn’t an option—because you’ve experienced firsthand what happens when you stick with it. You’ve felt what it’s like to live stronger, healthier, and more capable.

When You Stay, You’ll See the Results

The truth is, once people reach that two-year mark, they don’t quit. Why? Because by that point, it’s not about reaching some far-off fitness goal—it’s about living better in every way deep into your 90s. Your energy, your health, your mindset… all of it changes. Why would you quit doing something that improves your life on every level? People don’t quit when they see what’s possible. They keep going because they’ve created a lifestyle that works, one that fuels them, strengthens them, and pushes them to be the best version of themselves.

So I want to be clear: when you come to my gym, don’t expect my team not to ask you any questions if you try to give up on yourself. You came here to hire a professional coach, to make a commitment, to change or maybe even save your life. If you try to stop short of success, we’re going to pick up the phone. We’re going to invite you in for a conversation. We’re going to sit down and talk about what you’ve achieved, where you’re headed, what’s holding you back, and what your next step on your journey is, whether that’s with us or not. This is not a Netflix subscription we’re talking about. This is a coaching relationship with a team of people who care deeply about you and your health. And that’s why our clients come here in the first place, because you were looking to make a real change and you hired the experts to support you.

The Bottom Line: I Care Too Much to Let You Quit on Yourself

If you want to join a gym where quitting is easy, where no one’s going to care enough to ask questions, where they’ll collect your membership dues and not care if you come or not… Veneration is not that place. But if you want to commit to real change, if you want someone who’s going to hold you accountable and pull you forward as you step into the person you’re capable of becoming, we’re your people. We’re here to help you get where you want to go and with great pride we won’t make it easy for you to give up on your dreams.

So next time you feel like giving up, remember why you started. Remember that nobody is coming to save you. The change you’re after, the goals you set, the life you want—it’s all up to you. And I’m here to make sure that you don’t give up on it.
